Alright, guys. We’re finally here! The first Big Episode, episode 35! I’m really excited for these episodes! Remember, guys. Keep all discussion absolutely spoiler free! I really want to be as unspoilt as possible with this show. Anyways, let’s dive right in!

Episode 35- Lion 3: Straight to Video

When Lion will not stop lying on Steven's face while he sleeps, Steven awakens to discover himself in a different world.
Written and Storyboarded by Joe Johnston, Jeff Liu, and Rebecca Sugar

Closing thoughts-

What an incredible and powerful episode. I’m kind of quiet right now. This was absolutely stunning. This was a perfect, quiet episode with a lot to say. The part that hit me the hardest was in Lion’s dimension, when we see all of the things that Rose left there. We have her war memorabilia, her sword, and then, right there, is a Mr. Universe t-shirt. That was absolutely devastating. I feel like I just let this episode wash over me when I watched it. The raw emotion of this episode just carried such a heavy weight to it that it felt like I was drowning in it. I don’t know how to describe it except by saying that I loved every second of it. Let’s watch the second episode. Poor second episode, it’s got to be rough to follow this one up.

Episode 36-Alone Together

The Gems try to teach Steven how to successfully use his fusion powers and it leads to a very surprising result.
Written and Storyboarded by Hilary Florido, Katie Mitroff and Rebecca Sugar
Garnet has two gems.
Why had I never even considered this? Garnet has two gems! What if Garnet is a fucking fusion?! She’s way stronger than the other gems, and of course fusion would come easily to her if she was a fusion! Holy shit! I don’t know if this is anywhere close to enough evidence, but it’s totally possible!
OOOOH! That’s why some of you use this for the ship name!

Closing Thoughts-

About 2 hours ago, I remarked that it would be difficult for any episode to follow Lion 3. I was right, because an episode like this takes more passion and love than I think I even have to receive it. As a queer teen, this is one of the most overtly positive reinforcements of sexuality and identity that I have ever seen in my entire life. This episode goes beyond my ability to describe. I won’t even try. Watch it yourself; it does a better job than I could ever do. My new episode list goes as such-
  1. Alone Together
  2. Lion 3: Straight to Video
  3. Ocean Gem
  4. Coach Steven
  5. An Indirect Kiss
  6. Mirror Gem
  7. Laser Light Cannon
  8. Space Race
  9. Giant Woman
  10. So Many Birthdays
As for my music, it stands at-
  1. Strong in the real way
  2. Let yourself be wherever you are
  3. Steven and the Stevens/Crystal Gems
  4. Giant Woman
  5. Let me drive my van into your heart
Finally, my BGM-
  1. Glitch City
  2. Lapis' Tower
  3. Night Drive
  4. The Cave
  5. The Hill/Rose’s Fountain
These two episodes were beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Please, please, please avoid spoilers in the comments, and please be respectful of anything anyone says. Remember, your words can be hurtful, even if you don’t mean them to be. Finally, a question-
Until next time!

Pearl and Garnet

I've been thinking about the "Week of Sardonyx" Steven Bomb, and how it ties into The Answer from the most recent Steven Bomb. Garnet was just upset at Pearl; she was furious. As we've seen, Garnet can keep her cool pretty well, and I can understand her being angry at Pearl, but she lashed out at anyone during the entire thing. She even made it a point that she would rather go back on her word and form Sugilite again to get things done than fuse with Pearl. She then spends the next week fuming at Pearl.
The brunt of this is betrayal, but at the same time I think there was something more. Garnet isn't the best with feelings, and when she does express herself in tense situations its usually with anger. Garnet's comment, however, in the pit within the old Gem ship, is intriguing:
There are times when I look up to you for strength. You are your own gem. You control your destiny. Not me, not Rose, not Steven.
Now, some of this might be a stretch, so take it with a grain of salt (Obligatory Pearl joke here).

Pre-War

We start off in The Answer, where Garnet has just fused for perhaps the second time, and has stumbled upon Rose and Pearl's (aka the Resistance) location. She finds a place to begin to understand and be herself.
Of course, Rose is there, and Rose's compassion is the jumping point for Garnet to be Garnet. However, I believe Pearl was more than just a confidence boost to the young Garnet. Garnet probably idolized Pearl at this time, and who could blame her? Pearl is at her prime at this time; she's confident and cool, trained and sharp like the swords she wields. She's also a Pearl who defied everything, even the purpose she was created for, to rebel against a system that has been in place for eons. We see Pearl in a away that we aren't used to seeing her, entirely sure of herself and her skill; hell, she takes out two Jasper-like Gems, full-blown warriors, and made it look effortless.
Young Garnet probably idolized Pearl because of her strength and ability, and the confidence to be whatever she wanted to be. For a young fusion between two different Gems, the first of her kind, who could ask for more? Pearl represented everything she wanted to be, and even now we see Garnet being cool, collected, and a force to be reckoned with.
No wonder Garnet says she looked to Pearl for strength; millenia ago, she probably idolized Pearl for being an strong, independent Gem who don't need no Diamond.

Wartime

Garnet and Pearl probably built their friendship during this point, and Garnet probably trained with Pearl to fight against other Gems. It's at this time Garnet sees Pearl not as an idol anymore, but as a friend and equal. Remember that Pearl is still at her peak, and Garnet probably saw Pearl's skill in battle and remembers it in the present day.
Garnet probably also learns that Pearl harbors feelings for Rose, but being unsure of her own feelings she probably grows closer to Pearl because of their perceived mutual feelings. This changes later on, of course, and is important to the development of Pearl and Garnet's relationship.

Post-War

After the war is won, we see a change in dynamic. Garnet isn't the same fusion she was before; she's confident in herself, and she's won both her freedom and friendships that will last for ages to come. She stays on Earth because this is her home now, the one she chose with Rose as her leader and Pearl as her closest friend.
However, over time, Garnet sees Pearl turn into something. Pearl's romantic feelings turn into obsession; to Pearl, Rose was her driving force, her reason for doing everything up including fighting a whole war. Without the war, Pearl's drive turned full force to being with Rose.
However, Pearl doesn't have the benefit of being a perma-fusion. You have to understand that neither nor Rose understand love like Garnet does. Rose loved everything, and that love is not the same as the romance Pearl longed for but couldn't come to terms with. Pearl's feelings turned to obsession because she didn't know better, and Rose enabled her because she felt this was appropriate at the time.
However, Garnet probably helped Rose to understand what was truly going on; Pearl was moving backwards, becoming less confident and more dependent on Rose. In the end, Pearl became a slave once more, but to a different owner. Rose couldn't return Pearl's feelings; she fought for freedom, and Pearl was falling back into her original role, defying everything they fought bitterly to win. Pearl was even starting to thwart humans that got too close to Rose, if what she said in We Need to Talk is anything to go by ("You're just a phase...", etc.)
Garnet probably grew disappointed that her idol was becoming less independent, reverting back to the old enslavement and bondage to a system they fought against.

Steven's birth

Garnet was never really good at expressing her own emotions, and this disappointment probably turned to resentment. After ROse died, Pearl takes a nose-dive, going back to cleaning and serving as she once did. Pearl isn't the same Pearl Garnet knew all those years ago; she's broken and weak, and Garnet resents Pearl for becoming what Garnet once was; unsure and confused, purposeless and chained to duty. We see Garnet chiding Pearl on numerous occasions, fed up with Pearl's pettiness toward Amethyst, her berating and jealousy toward Greg, and occasionally her resentment of Steven.
Garnet was forced to become the leader when she didn't want to, only because her old friend was too obsessed with their old leader to do anything. She had to take the reins knowing full well that the old Pearl, the one she fought a war with, could have easily lead them, or at least help Garnet to lead the remaining Crystal Gems.
Garnet finally lets loose all her anger after Rose's death; all the disappointment at losing her old friend for this quivering mess of insecurity, bitterness, obsession over a Gem long passed during Cry for Help.
Garnet sees Pearl as her idol still, the on who trained her, the one she fought beside as a friend and compatriot. When she learns Pearl is using her for strength, the illusion that her old friend wass still in there shatters. She sees Pearl as a failure, a shadow of her former self, and for a moment Garnet loses all faith in Pearl finding herself again. She bursts out, angry at being betrayed not only through trust, but also in the belief her old friend would one day return from the ashes of lost romances and pettiness stronger than ever.
Eventually, Pearl makes a rebound with Garnet, amethyst, and Steven's help, which is where we see her now. Pearl is learning to truly be independent, and not use Rose as her base of confidence.
Pearl's story is not one of growth, but a return to her past prime. Garnet's role in the story is not a source of strength, but a mirror into the past of what Pearl once was, and what she could be again.
Again, this is a bit of a stretch, so be careful with taking everything I said as more than musing. Leave your thoughts below.

Theory on Gem Power + 6 types of Love WARNING: LONG!!!

So this is an actual theory, maybe just a theor-ette(like a vinginette, but for theories). Anyway, it has to do with just some general idea's I have about gem power.
I've seen it in a couple of other places, but I also believe that a gem's power is referenced by their size(Rebecca Sugar noted that her characters don't have set 'sizes' so much as they are scaled against one another- this would easily explain why). Examples, Rose is the biggest obviously and in the SDCC showing of the extended season two opening, Yellow Diamond was obviously biggest of her team with Jasper a close second- able to fight on par with Garnett, the biggest of her group though because she's a fusion and thus the power of two- ruby and sapphire are weaker than the others which is why their small. Pearl is not necessarily "bigger" than amethyst, only taller- she has much less mass to her form so it could be more like they're just distributing it differently. Steven is the exception seeing as he's half human, and must grow.
In the setting of fusions, Opal is much smaller than Sugilite or Sardonyx not only because it's only two gems fusing but because Garnet's power is that great. Also, it's worth mentioning that Opal is bigger than Garnett, seeing as, individually, Pearl and Amethyst are stronger than Sapphire and Ruby. Similarly, while it might be hard to tell, I think that Sardonyx is a little tiny bit bigger than Sugilite, though, this could again be distribution seeing as Sugilite is a meaty broad and Sardonyx has more lines than curves.
Now, seeing as fusions are relationships, it bears worth to think of what those relationships are, and furthermore to remember that all relationships are subject to the dynamics of power through superior and subordinate ranks. This doesn't mean physical power of course but what like your natural contenance or presence- something like that.
I feel that this expresses itself in the form that a fusion takes, and in a similar but less obvious fashion the way the way gems make themselves look. I'll start with that
Pearl: Her personality is group-depended(as confirmed by Rebecca Sugar) which means she needs to be part of a group, serving purpose as part of a team. One way I think of that is she needs to serve. This is one facet of why she was so attached to Rose and so lost without her(not the whole of it obviously, but certainly a noteworthy part). She listens to Garnett- the de facto leader- but I think she doesn't serve because she knows Garnet is Ruby and Sapphire, strong of course, but no Rose. Because of her servitude, what she was taught as a Pearl or an intelligence/plan/thinker type gem, and how she felt being 'defective' that she makes herself the the thinnest, like she's the easiest to miss. The only thing really big about her is her head, because that's the only part of her she believes is worth anything.
Amethyst: Amethyst is counter-dependent- always rebelling whether for a reason or not, like she doesn't feel she belongs and must reject them or constantly test how far her rejection can go until she proves herself right. She seems to mostly have come out of her hole in the form she had, and has obviously taken her hair from Greg. Her clothing choices are most in sync with Earth style of the gems, but her body remains short and squat(though it's observed she can make her form biggetaller more muscular than curvy) I think this is because she did not grow up with the benefit of knowing what Homeworld or it's inhabitants usually looked like- she's only had Earth to model herself after. While I think there's a chance however small that she's retained her shape because she was the baby among the gems(pre-Steven) and got used to it, or used to her form from coming out of the hole where she didn't seem to meet anyone else until Rose & co. and so felt no reason/had no thought to change, I think it's also because she doesn't like herself. She can hide behind her hair, she's close to the ground- small and squat- and more than any of the other gems, she changes her form into anything else so she doesn't have to be herself. She's not muscle-curve looking like strong Garnett, or head-centric like Pearl, she's kind of like a lump of clay.
Rose: Roses' form was big(physical power) but completely unthreatening. There was hardly a straight line on her- she was all rounded edges and curls and circles, making her look soft and safe. She was also proud and considered herself highly, especially in comparison to humans. The biggest thing on her that wasn't her was her hair, and she might have noticed that at least on Earth a woman's hair was her pride(all the other gems have very Gem hair, save for Amethyst and Jasper, their hair comes in shapes or stands up oddly or looks rather unnatural). She put her hair in big, gigantic, completely impossible to miss curls like "Oh, human women are proud of their hair- haha I can do that too." In battle with Jasper in Pearl's memory projection her hair was curled but she'd obviously already been on Earth. Plus, assuming she was once part of the diamond Authority, it's more than possible her hair was once more diamond as it's not a style specific to the diamonds (See Peridot). Furthermore her dress was pretty human and you don't see many skirts among the gems(her and Lapis are the only one's I've noted) but her dress is very wedding/prom, and who draws more attention/is more important than a woman going to her wedding or prom? She must have felt that fitting.
I think that's enough examples of the gems themselves, so I'm gonna go into fusions.
Useful information: Where we have one word for love and apply it to everything, Greeks divided love into several words to describe different kinds. I think all the fusions between the crystal Gems are based on love, but to be more specific, I'm using the Greek words to describe them.
6 Greek loves:
*Agape- Selfless love, one that extended to all people, even strangers, and is often detrimental to the expresser where it is beneficial to those it is being expressed.
*Eros- Passionate/Romantic love, but viewed rather negatively as the loss of control to a dangerous and fiery emotion that possesses you with desire and makes you irrational and unreasonable.
*Philia- Friendship, but more in line with the deep comradery that springs from brothers-in-arms; being loyal and sacrificing for one another. -Another kind of Philia is Stoge, which is the love a parent has for their child.
*Ludus- Playful love, like that between children, close friends, and new lovers.(I think I want to note to you that the writer of the article I read for this said dancing with strangers would be the ultimate ludic activity)
*Pragma- Longstanding love based on compromise, patience, and tolerance.
*Philautia- love of self, outside narcissim, like the Buddhist "Self-compassion" as an understanding of how to appreciate yourself.
Garnet: Ruby and Sapphire are obviously romantic toward one another, but I think the bases of their relationship is Philia, probably with more Eros coming from Ruby and more Pragma from Sapphire. Together they make Garnet, who is Independent, which taking into account she's a fusion makes her as an individual, Philautia. Because the two of them always think of themselves as together and love each other so much, it's easy for them to come together completely seeing as there's always a wanted give and take between them and no one is vying for superiority or feels inferior in the presence of the other. All, of course, save for the third eye which I'd posit is mostly just to share sights the look at if not just to keep the future vision. Otherwise, they're a perfect fusion.
**Note*, combined, their gems are two hands of their fusion, working together, being able to hold one another, and being able to interact with the world around them separately and together. But not the heart or the head, which is why Garnet might seem sort of detached at times and is more of an action person.
Opal: The relationship between Pearl and Amethyst when they fuse, I believe is a mix of Ludus, Philia, and Stoge. Because they obviously had to fuse a first time, and from Amethyst's assertion that Pearl isn't fun "anymore", along with what I consider the somewhat silly way the two of them danced together of what we saw in "Giant Woman" I think a lot of it was a Ludus, maybe like 60%, thinking that the first time they fused, they were just having some fun together. Fun for Pearl is analytical in nature and fun for Amethyst is lacking responsibility, so that's where I think the 10% Stoge comes in; Pearl would probably have been teaching Amethyst about fusion who probably would have been happy to learn and try out dance moves, much like a parent nurtures a child and teaches a new skill. The other 30% would have been the Philia of comrades, which is what was needed when neither of the other emotions remained easily accessable for either of them and they needed to help Steven, as comrades, loyal to each other for the mission and their Steven. Being that the first time the two of them fused, they would have been enjoying themselves and Amethyst submitting easily to Pearl the fusion comes out pretty well. Opal is the only pure-gem fusion to only have two eyes, I think because Pearl took control completely of what they saw and Amethyst allowed it. The only imperfection is their arms, and that's just because I think they'd both understand that they have to work together but not be one in the same.
**Note* Their two gems are the head and the heart, which would also explain why Opal seems so even tempered. She feels but she has her head to control it and think things through.
Sugilite: I think Garnet and Amethyst's relationship is Stoge, Pragma, and a touch of Eros. Obviously Garnet takes care of Amethyst, always has, and looks after her same as the rest of her group, sort of like a mother hen though far less involved. Amethyst in turn, looks up to Garnet and listens to her. When Garnet is upset at Pearl and demands instead to fuse with Amethyst, this is all that really remains a sense of Amethyst needing to listen, and Garnet making the descisions. Still, though Amethyst is wild, and dealing with her takes a lot of patience especially from a level as high as Garnet's so pragma becomes involved. However, from Amethyst, the desire to be with Garnet, to feel that powerful, is strong(both she and Pearl freak out when Garnet says/implies she wants to fuse with them), and it can often overrule other thoughts. Between them, Amethyst doesn't feel the need- I think- to submit, instead she wants to burst out right along side Garnett and Garnet can accept that though both know who is the more powerful. Sugilite though has 5 eyes instead of four, I think because Sapphire has to stay active in order to counter all the strength and wildness of what would otherwise be a more pure Ruby and Amethyst. Garnett I think is the base though, as the body type is all hers mostly, and allows the more superficial details to be added on top. Still, a lot of Amethyst shows forth in Sugilite, from leg shape to lips, to hair.
**Note* Sugilite's gems are the heart and the hands which just makes sense, there seems to be little to no thought going on but a lot of desire/'I want to do this, I want to do that' carefree-ness with two strong hands of action to back it up.
Sardonyx - Philia and Philautia, with just another touch of Eros. We know the Eros comes from Pearl as similarly as it came from Amethyst in Sardonyx, but Philia is in the two of them recognizing each other as true comrades, having fought in the war together and recognizing each other strengths. Pearl doesn't fawn over Garnet the way she did for Rose so it's easier for her to see her as an equal. Philautia I put because both of them, I believe, like themselves when they go into this relationship with one another and in doing so, plus Pearl loves being together, and they end up bordering on narcissistic as Sardonyx(I say bordering because true narcissism sees itself as the highest point, believes everything in the world is at it's core and most chiefly to their personal gain or personal enemy, and cannot truly love anything/anyone else and Sardonyx obviously loves Steven). Garnet, once again, holds the superior seat in the relationship, but Pearl believes she can be of a bit of use. Once again it's Garnet's body type that is the base, her legs especially, and even the arms could be said more of her than Pearl as both arms are skinny, but only Garnet has arm/hand coverings and palms that wide. Pearl's pointy nose and more triangular hair. Sardonyx only has four eyes though, though two are much more squinted/pushed aside/small than the others for Pearl's submittance. Pearl's arms, much like Amethyst's in both other fusions, are the lower of the two(judging from which one's pull the corresponding weapon, Though Opal's are much more side to side in shoulder placement, and Sugilite's seem to spring from the same joint where Sugilite's are around her hips).
**Note* Sardonyx's gems are her head and her hands. She thinks, and also thinks highly of herself her thoughts, and her prowess, and she has hands to show the world this is true- preform, entertain, and display.
Rainbow Quarts- Stoge and Eros, plain and simple. Rose I think, sees all three other gems as children, beneath her, but lovingly so, while Pearl is like a teenager in the throughs of a heavy, possessive crush. However, because what Pearl brings is also complete Agape toward Rose, their fusion is also nearly perfect, Pearl contributes little to the fusion save for hair color, clothing style, and her eyes, even her proud nose is downplayed and becomes curvy. Furthermore, I don't think Rainbow Quarts is a heck of a lot bigger than Rose. Seperately, I don't think Pearl fusing with Steven would result in Rainbow Quartz- the relationship has changed to Agape and Stoge mostly I think, with Steven perhaps bringing in Philia for being part of the team.
**Note* RQ's gems are her head and her stomach. Where I leave feelings/desire/untethered emotion to Amethyst and her heart gem, I take Rose's to be depth(she's seen a lot and chosen her stand), Mothering (Umbilical/belly button) and/or a Self-Center(the middle of the body-basically- and her opinions on herself). Taking mostly the Self-Center and the head, I think is why RQ seems so sensual and sure of herself as to give teasing, erotic looks and such. There wasn't much of her shown though so it's difficult to tie down.
Alexandrite- There is so much going on with Alexandrite it's pretty much just the whole list. With all those different things and no clear separation, it's clear why she's kind of a mess even with two mouths, 3 sets of arms, and such. They don't seem to do it very well, because of unclear power dynamics, so their personalities begin to separate and they eventually pop.
**Note* Alexandrite's gems are all over the place. She's being pulled by too many assertions of power.
Stevonnie- Ludis. Garnet pretty much names their relationship/experience "Fun" and thus encourages them to have it. Every time they fuse it's because they're having fun together and usually right after Steven feels a little lighthearted and blushy from what could be seen as unintentional young lover style flirting. With only one strong emotion between them, much like Garnett, it's much easier for them to form a perfect fusion, along with the fact that their both part human and don't conciouslly choose their appearance, instead understanding what there must be, i.e. two legs, two arms, two eyes. Each of them thinks more highly of the other than they do themselves which once again creates a desired give and take between them. However, because they become one person, they don't have fun together- still coming to think of themselves separately, but with no way to depict it as others can with their eyes.
**Note* It's hard to say for Stevonnie because they only have one gem between them and it's steven's so it changes neither color nor placement.
Steven: I've listed Steven here because I think he's basically a fusion of Greg and Rose, just you know, much more Earthy. Greg can't change his form and Rose has no middle ground bonding agent(as with Stevonnie) so Rose has to sacrifice her entire form instead with bits of Greg in it. That leads me to assume Steven is a personification of the small bit of Eros, but mostly Agape. Rose was always willing to give her life for humans, which is why she was at war for them, but Greg was her favorite, and in the end she sacrificed herself to be one with him and bring Steven(their fusion) into the world. As Agape is selfless and sacrificial, that was all there was too it and they fit and he's so perfect a fusion no one knows that's what he is yet.
**Note* As stated one of the reasons I think Rose's gem is her belly is for Mothering and Umbilical. That's Steven's belly button where he obviously(probably) wouldn't have needed one, and who is more sacrificing than a mother for her child?
.:EDIT:. Going on the knowledge from Garnet that a fusion is more than the sum of it's parts, Steven as a fusion of Rose even just with Greg, would be theoretically provably stronger than Rose. Plus Fusions generally meld colors of their seperates, and what was Rose? Light and bubblegum pink. What was Greg? Black. What is Steven's shirt(of which he has no idea how he acquired and was given to him too early for him to fit)? Dark pink.
Anyway, that's a read, so feel free to leave this be if you want. I just wrote it to have it down. BTW, Malachite's entire relationship is based on distrust and anger. They're always trying to come apart now so the form is unstable. That's why she wonks and looks so mostly effed up. And the gem shard fusions are completely without consent so their each still trying to be them and have no feelings toward the others, which is why their even more wonky and effed up.

[Full Ronald] The Mysteries of Steven Universe Episod e 3-

The World of Steven Universe is full of mysteries. The writers have said there "are no filler" episodes, and the theory is that when you have 11 minutes to tell a part of your story, especially in a labor intensive medium such as cartoons, every detail may be significant. This series of posts will explore interesting, weird, and/or unexplained bits of each episode. I will be inspecting any and everything that strikes my fancy - many details will be insignificant and probably amount to nothing more than world-building or just-for-fun fluff, but since there is literally nothing better to do until this, the post-Steven Bomb 4 Hiatus ends, I'm going go....Full Ronaldo.
Explanation of layout: I will record my observations in the order they occur while watching the episode. I will also make a note of whether the "mystery" or theory invoked has been Resolved, Partially Resolved, or remains Unresolved. In some cases there may not be any clear need for a resolution, where I will simply not list a status. To qualify as Partially Resolved, there needs to be significant evidence to support the theory. To qualify as entirely Resolved, the theory should be explicitly confirmed either by images or preferably explained by a character. This should go without saying, but there can and will be spoilers. I will do my best to avoid spoilers of unaired (leaks, aka advance spoilers) content, but I may reference storyboard or cut material. Consider yourself warned.
Episode 3: Cheeseburger Backpack
Note: I'm sorry all my screencaps are dim, I'm watching via Hulu and it does that when you pause.
Preamble
Aw hell yeah, now we are getting to the real meat and potatoes of this show. The most pervasive mystery in this series is that it would seem that Gems have been on earth longer than possibly even humans. Their tech and structures have been around long enough that humans seem to just completely ignore it. It is a common trope in a lot of sci-fi/fantasy that "normal" people will just ignore things that are too strange - for examples of this, check out the works of Terry Pratchett, specifically anything involving the character of Death. That's a bit of a tangent but the point is, there are these MASSIVE structures, seemingly all over the place judging by the maps in It Could Have Been Great, but they seem relatively undisturbed except for the decay of time and nature.
These structures are arguably the biggest clues to unlocking the history of Gems on earth, so expect any episode showing places important to the Gems to be longer posts - but hopefully also more mysterious!
Item 1: Steven Star Eyes Count 6
Steven is excited because he thinks he finally has found a way to become a helpful member of the Crystal Gems.
Item 2: Previous Mission (Status: Unresolved)
It would appear that the mission the CG's have just returned from involved retrieving the Moon Goddess Statue. They are covered in feathers and have a giant egg with stars on it.
My first thought was, we've only see one giant "bird" in all of Steven Universe, perhaps this egg belonged to that Gem Monster which would explain why the Roc attacked Amethyst, Pearl and Steven. Then common sense returned and I remembered that Gems almost certainly do not lay eggs of any kind. Furthermore, the Roc-type Gem Monster is highly unusual compared to other Gem Monsters we see making it even less likely to lay an egg, but we will talk about that in the episode for Giant Woman.
So, thus I conclude that there is actually a giant earth bird somewhere laying eggs, or else a normal sized earth bird laying giant eggs. Yeeowch
Item 3: The Moon Goddess Statue (Status: Unresolved)
This object is VERY unusual when you consider it in the context of all the gems we see in the show. I don't know how much of the earlier object designs are or will be considered retconned later on - the fact that we see Connie's bracelet and centipeetle in the very first episode implies to me that continuity, at least the continuity of plot objects, is very important to the writers. It's been said that Rebecca Sugar has a "Steven Universe Bible" of sorts that has the entire plot & storyline mapped out. I believe it.
There are several reasons this item is unusual. Let's take a look
The first thing off the bat is that this is a made object - there is a small blue gem embedded in a sculpture. We will come to see a number of objects involving embedded Gems, but for the post part they are considered "Gem Powered Objects" - the Gem is embedded in the object to give it non-static powers: Lapis's mirror, the pyramid gem, the desert gem, possibly the lighthouse gem, the Clocktower in the SU comic books. All of these Gem-powered objects are able to affect and interact with the world around them.
This gem does not exhibit such powers, though that's only saying we do not see it exhibit such powers. Rather, it seems intended to function as a key. At first glance, I've always assumed the base of the statue to be a second gem which would be even more unusual, but upon reflection, I believe it is only the carved base of the statue, and the lighter color is derived from the carving technique having a different effect compared to the technique used to carve the female form.
Getting to that now - the design of the statue is also very interesting. "She" appears to have the same shape/physical characteristics as Rose Quartz, and the similarities don't end there. It's hard to tell due to the placement of the statue's arms, but it looks like she might be wearing a strapless dress similar to the one Rose Quartz wears. She has long hair and a dreamy, closed-eyed expression similar to that shown in Rose's painting. Here again we see the an eye-related motif. Closed eyes may represent the state of being unaffected by or uninterested in worldly matters. Or it can represent an artist who has trouble doing eyes. Welcome to shrug city, P
Considering the events of The Test, this entire episode could have been called "Second Guess Everything When You Rewatch It Later"
There are also diamonds shown on the "stomach" area of the statue, reminiscent of the placement of gem on Rose Quartz's body. I believe these diamonds are simply the light being refracted through the blue gem onto the statue - however, that does not make this insignificant. The blue gem is being held in front of the torso/chest. We see this pose more and more as the series goes on. The only thing that gives me pause is the position of the statue's hands - compare this to the way that White Diamond is depicted in the tower on the moon. The statue's fingers are parallel to the ground, while this position is shown with the fingers held vertically in all other cases. Then there is the "wrist cross" pose that we see Peridot perform, and Pearl also performs (around her face/head) during the extended opening. There are three chakra aligned along the torso between the chest and the stomach, and interestingly enough they include the green and yellow chakra. I'm not sure if this is relevant or not yet.
Item 4 - The Mission (Status: Semi-resolved)
"We have to place the Moon Goddess Statue at the top of the Lunar Sea Spire by midnight or the whole place will collapse!"
By midnight? Midnight on the dot? Okay Pearl, that seems pretty specific but let's give you the benefit of the doubt. Even though time is based on the earth's rotation on its axis, and the moon's orbit around the earth ain't got nothing to do with it. It's a Lunar Sea Spire - not only has it got the inconstant moon all up in it's business, but the ocean too, and when those two troublemakers get together all sorts of wacky hijinks can happen. We can hazard a guess that something something, waxing and waning of the moon, its periodic orbit around the earth blah blah, rising and falling of tides, yadda yadda, incrementally undermining the foundation of this ancient structure until it reaches a critical threshold of stability.
I want to believe you Pearl, but we all know you're a dirty liar.
Item 5 - The History of the World As Told By Pearl (Status: Unresolved)
Alright, so a year ago when I started watching this show, this episode was what really grabbed my attention. I've mentioned before the central mystery of, what was the role of Gems on earth. Everything Pearl is about to tell us, we have to question, even moreso in light of everything we learned as of It Could Have Been Great in regards to what the plan was for Earth by Yellow Diamond, not to speak of any of the other Diamonds. We learned a lot in Steven Bomb 4, and that information is going to be the basis for most of our discussions in trying to analyze what we see and are told in these early episodes.
You should have seen it in it's heyday. The structure of the Lunar Sea Spire is remarkably similar to the Sky Fortress seen in The Answer. That and other evidence I'm about to point out, not least of all the fact that it's a GIANT HONKING 13 STORY TOWER BUILT ON THE SEA BED CALLED THE LUNAR SEA SPIRE would indicate that this tower was built for and by Blue Diamond.
It was an oasis for gems on earth!. Oh man. So much just in this single shot. First of all, I can see why Gems would want an oasis on earth, after facing the horrors of this terrible, hell-like planet. Hmm, wait, maybe something more like this or this is what Pearl was thinking of.
Maybe I should have started with the central focus of this shot. That statue remind you of anyone?? I want to assume that it is Blue Diamond but at this point, I really don't feel safe doing so. If we assume this statue is a water fountain, and that is water coming down from the bowl and her lower hands, it would confirm that water is the elemental domain of blue gems - however, we do not know about the powers of any of the diamonds yet, we actually have very little information on this topic still.
There are a number of statues shown later on that also bear a resemblance to this one, mainly in the episode Steven the Sword Fighter. Here on the right, we see a statue or carving depicted with a moon-type symbol, whose hair, body shape and facial expression resembles that of the Moon Goddess Statue. There's a statue not shown in the first clip, directly across from the "Moon Goddess" wearing the same style hood.
One of the biggest arguments against the idea that this statue in the Lunar Sea Spire is depicting Blue Diamond is the two pairs of arms. I'm not a subscriber to the theory that the Diamonds are fusions. I could come up with plenty of arguments explaining the depiction of 2 pairs of arms on a non-fusion Gem in a statue, not the least of which being "It's art you uncultured swine!" This is a recollection of Pearl's and unfortunately we never see this statue "in real life" to get more detail.
This shot is very important in my opinion because it also depicts other figures. When this episode first aired, we had no frame of reference to know whether they were all meant to be Gems, or a combination of Gems and humans interacting. The way Pearl talks about it, and how the Crystal Gems go on about "protecting humanity" and "saving the day" gave a very different impression early on in the series about Gems and humans coexisting, compared to what we come to find out is the actual reality.
Item 6 - Steven Star Eyes Count 7
Steven is finally on a Gem mission!
Item 7 - Steven's Heritage
Pearl is the only one who ever seems to care about Steven's heritage, or about preserving Gem tech on earth, and even then it's hit or miss. I wonder if we will see a pattern emerge of what Pearl cares about versus what she doesn't when we have more of her backstory and timeline. Perhaps she is only nostalgic of places that she experienced before turning renegade, or places she associates with that pre-war time. If my theory that this place was an "oasis" after the creation of the Kindergartens started to affect the landscape of earth, that starts to give us more clues about the timeline of the Gem Civil War on earth. It will also back up theories I have on Rose Quartz and her motivations.
However, I am not ready to assume that Pearl experienced this location at it's prime herself. She may have heard of it, or extrapolated what it was like based on her past experiences with Gem gathering places. If she experienced this place herself, when it was still being used for its intended purpose, with such a nostalgic attitude, then she must have still been a member of Gem society when she first came to earth, and went Renegade later. That seems to make sense in the context of the storyline as we know it so far.
Item 8 - The Vortex
We've seen Lapis in action. We know that she is incredibly overpowered compared to other Gems thusfar. We don't know if the vortex is created by technology(some kind of engine), magic, or a combination of both. It would seem that it has continued to exist without intervention for some time.
Based on what we see later in the episode and how the Moon Goddess Statue is designed to be used intercepting the beam of moonlight to the tower, I have a theory. There is some kind of Gem engine within this spire. When the Moon Goddess Statue is placed at the top, it channels some kind of light energy, manipulates or transfigures it, and the energy is then stored in some kind of battery/generator that continues to power the engine.
In terms of what we know about blue gems, this doesn't seem to far-fetched. They deal with "flow" - water and time specifically are the ones we know about. Sapphire is attuned to one directional flow of time and can predict likely outcomes. When she fuses with Garnet, a gem whose strengths lie in explosive energy, combustion, fire, it scatters the flow and branches - we know that Garnet also has some electrical power which is generally depicted a combination of fire and "water" elementally. If you've watched Avatar: The Last Airbender, firebenders can create and control lighting by using bending techniques that are similar to waterbending so I'm not just totally pulling this out of my ass.
My first point here is that there is some kind of narrative being told to us, via background images and clues scattered throughout the series, involving this tower, (blue) gems with water power, the moon and some kind of gem associated with the moon, possibly a white gem.
Just to return to the whole statue thing, it's very unusual that Pearl refers to it as a Goddess as we never hear that term used again on this show outside of specifically talking about this statue.
The vortex appears to be sucking the water down and doing ??? with it, before it can reach the structure of the spire. So this is not a bubble or forcefield - it's suction. This is the second instance of a sucking-type device on this show, shown to be very powerful.
In re-reading this section, I'm asking myself, what is the point of the spire in the first place. Surely there are more convenient locations for a dirty great spire than at the bottom of the sea.
Item 9 - Steven Diamond Eyes 1
Determined Steven!
Look familiar?
Item 10 - Horses and Lions
On the wall next to the spiral stairs leading up, we see 4-legged animals. They appear to have horse-shapes but at least one is holding it's tail erect.
It's interesting to me that they would show land-animal depictions, on a structure in the middle of an ocean, when all the other decorations we see are geometric abstract designs or gem statues which leads me to Items 11 and 12.
Item 11 - Diamonds and Triangles
Diamonds and triangles everywhere. There were also plenty of diamonds on the outside of the spire.
Item 12 - Gem Busts
Walking up the stairs/down the hallway, we see a bust in the background. It shows a figure that may have had arms similar to Sugilite, 2 pairs of forearms, joined at the elbow. There is no visible gem.
Continuing on, a second statue in the wall niche, same as the previous one.
And then a third statue, same arm style, no visible gem depicted.
Item 13 - HoloPearl and the Crystal Shrimps (Status:Unresolved)
We know from Steven the Sword Fighter and Beach Party that Pearl is capable of generating multiple holograms with sufficient combat strength...why does she generate holograms to show the other two what to do when she is capable of just creating holograms that can just...do that. This is a scene where I'm like wtf Pearl. If this was a test for Steven all along, why not include him in the combat plan? Was the point of the test just to see if Steven could simply accompany a mission without making things worse? (In which case...failed.) She claims the crystal shrimp are deadly which I'm forced to conclude is more lies.
"Don't touch that! Their shards are deadly!"
Crystal shrimp are another oddity in the SU world. They look and act like Gem Monsters, but as far as we know, they have no gems - Pearl specifically refers to them as "shards". Are they gem shards? Or is "crystal" a special term in regards to gem life? In that case, what is the significance of the team calling themselves the "Crystal" Gems?
I have a partial theory on this, and it also ties into my theory about Rose Quartz and her motivations. I'm not quite ready to go into that theory yet.
"Bagel sandwich!"
IF THESE ARE GEM LIFE FORES WHY ARE THEY INTERESTED IN EATING BAGELS? MAYBE THEY AREN'T EATING, JUST INVESTIGATING BUT STILL, THIS IS SO RANDOM.
This may just be a gag...but then again, maybe not...
Great, now I want a bagel.
Item 14 - Watch Out! (Status:Resolved)
Early clues to Garnet's future vision. I'm not counting when Garnet said earlier that she "sensed some instability" because I'm pretty sure that was a Garnet Joke.
Item 15 - Triangles
So many triangles up here on the roof.
Item 16 - What next Pearl?
Let's ask ourselves, what would have happened if Steven HAD been successful and brought the Moon Goddess Statue. I don't believe that it would have restored the spire. According to my theory above, they were merely re-charging the generator that keeps the water away from the spire, which would have bought them more time. Since they failed, the water came crashing in, destroying the already weakened tower. The high level of humidity, salt in the air and the suction from the vortex below is probably what caused the decrepitude of the spire. They would have had to restore the spire themselves after the moon-statue ritual, which begs the question of, if you had know this spire was here the whole time Pearl, why weren't you taking care of it and checking on it before now? It all goes back to The Test but still.
So as I was saying, whether this is a test or not, Pearl is going on and on about Steven's heritage and taking it seriously and blah blah. IF the spire had not been destroyed, what were you going to tell Steven Pearl? How much of his Gem Heritage would you have revealed?
Furthermore, as much as I love a field trip, if you're able to conjure images of the structure with your Gem...why not just TELL Steven about it while projecting slides for him to see how it looked?
Ultimately, I don't want to say that this episode's writing was weak, despite how much I am criticising it. It just had a different agenda, which is building on what we know about Steven and his interactions with the Gems. We get plunged into this complex world and it takes off at 0-60 from the start, but what I think gets lost in translation is that we are actually watching Steven's journey into the world of the Gemkind from the beginning. Steven admits that he "doesn't ask follow up questions" and generally accepts what he is told at face value a lot - something that begins to change later, but for now we need to realize that Steven has been living with the Gems, seeing them go off on and return from missions, without really knowing what's up. Based on the extended intro, I believe Steven has lived with the Gems for a little while, perhaps several months to a year. We are with him on the ride as he actually starts involves himself with what the Gems are doing on earth. The show is told from the point of view of Steven, and thusfar, everything HE knows, WE know - everything WE don't know, HE doesn't know.
That's why these early episodes can feel so painful and why it's easy to dislike Steven for people just getting into the show from the beginning, because we want Steven to be as curious about everything as we are, but he keeps sabotaging his chances at learning more, and never asking for more info.
Finally, I believe that Garnet knew Steven was going to fail to save the spire, and that's why Steven was able to take this "Test". She and Pearl conspire through the series to hide information from Steven - they both know what is at stake. If there was a chance they would have had to explain things to Steven, they wouldn't have used THIS as a test for his first mission.
Item 17 - Crystal Shrimp Redux
Do you think Crystal Shrimp can breathe underwater? If they like bagels, I'm not going to assume they are like Gems and don't need to breathe. This episode is so very perplexing.
END OF EPISODE
Edit: Wow I botched that title.

The Crystal Gems [Steven Universe] vs Geralt of Rivia [Witcher Series]

Having read the books, and noticed just how much Geralt seems to twirl a lot in the game, so I figured, what would happen if he fought the Crystal Gems.
R1: Geralt in a 1v1 vs each gem in succession.
R2: Geralt vs All of the Gems at once.
R3: The gems begin to fuse- Geralt vs Opal, then Sugilite, then Alexandrite. Steven is on the sideway.
R4: Peridot in a Mech joins in, but Geralt gains the benefit of one ally of his own.
