All-Time Cincinnati Native Team

Hey, all the stove is colder than the weather so I created a team of players from the Cincinnati area (title should have said that, my mistake) A lot of the names listed played for the Reds (I will compile all the names later and post in the comments). Hope you enjoy and do you agree with all of the picks? Who would you switch?

[AMA] New Mexico State AD Mario Moccia — Ask Questions, Answers start Thurs (9/20) @ 4:30pm ET

AMA FORMAT: here at /CFB the mods set up the AMA thread ahead of time so readers can get questions in ahead of time and our guest(s) can just show up at a scheduled time and start answering. Look out for Mario Moccia (MarioMocciaNMSU), as well as sports information director John Vu (JohnVuNMSU)—answers will begin Thursday (Sept 20) at 2:30pm MT (4:30 ET)

NMSU MARIO MOCCIA, Director of Athletics at New Mexico State

We are happy to welcome New Mexico State's Director of Athletics, Mario Moccia, to /CFB for an AMA; in addition Assistant AD - Media Relations, John Vu (SID) will be here as well. As many of you know, NMSU entered 2018 as a FBS independent (other sports remain in the WAC). It's an interesting position, and we're happy to provide an opportunity to interact with someone who both played for (baseball) and now runs his alma mater's athletic department.
He has an extensive bio:
Mario Moccia returned to his alma mater on Jan. 5, 2015, as the 23rd Director of Athletics at New Mexico State University after serving for nine years as the Director of Athletics at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., and eight years as the senior associate athletic director at the University of Missouri.
The 1989 graduate of NM State has already created an immediate impact in his years as Director of Athletics. From a national standpoint, he has guided New Mexico State to its top four finishes in the Learfield Director’s Cup standings – including three years with 100-plus points (2014-15, 2015-16 and 2017-18).
Under his direction, the Aggies have won 39 championships (regular season and/or tournament) through 2017-18, including three-consecutive Western Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cup (2014-17)
The 2017-18 campaign is arguably the best athletic year in NM State history with the football team not only earning a bowl bid, but also bringing home the first bowl victory in 57 years when the Aggies defeated Utah State 26-20 in overtime to claim the 2017 NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl. Aggie fans came in full force to support their team to the tune of 25,000-plus Aggies in Tucson on Dec. 29.
In addition, New Mexico State joined Duke, Michigan State and Purdue as the only athletic departments that won a bowl game and had a men’s basketball program that won 28 or more games. Heading into the spring championships, NM State was only one of 15 schools that sent its team to an FBS bowl game, NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and NCAA Baseball Regional. Of those 15 schools, NM State, Houston and San Diego State were the only teams from a Group of 5 conference.
Overall, the athletic department finished 124th in the 2017-18 Learfield Director’s Cup standings with 145.00 points, the second-highest in school history. The Aggies also finished second in the WAC Commissioner’s cup standing with 81.25 points despite only sponsoring 15 of the 19 sports that qualify for points.
Excellence on the field continued to shine under Moccia’s direction with four student-athletes taking home seven All-America honors in 2017-18. Jemerrio Jones of men’s basketball became just the ninth All-American in program history and fifth Aggie to earn Associated Press All-American distinction. Baseball had three players take home All-America honors in Kyle Bradish, Johnathan Groff and Nick Gonzales – who arguably had the best freshman season in program history after hauling in All-America honors from four different organizations.
In addition to the football’s bowl championship, New Mexico State hauled in nine conference regular-season and tournament titles while sending women’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball to NCAA postseason play. NM State also had nine WAC Players of the Year with Jones (men’s basketball) and Kelsey Horton (softball) being named the 2017-18 Joe Kearney Award recipients, which are given to the top male and female student-athletes in the WAC.
Moccia led NM State into a multi-million dollar multimedia rights agreement with Learfield in 2015, a first in the history of the University. He followed that up in 2016 as he obtained a new exclusive five-year footwear and apparel contract with Under Armor. This new agreement more than doubled the University’s previous agreement.
With Moccia at the helm, the Aggies made several facility upgrades. Presley Askew Field installed a state-of-the-art synthetic grass infield. In addition, the baseball stadium saw renovations to its bullpens and batting cages as well as construction of a new press box and field turf. The swimming and diving team is enjoying the new Wanda Glass Swimming and Diving Locker Room as well as new coaches offices, while Aggie Memorial Stadium received a major upgrade with the addition of Club 27. In addition, football team locker room was renovated thanks to the generous donation of the Allen Family.
NM State has also continued to excel in the classroom since Moccia took the reigns as all athletics teams surpassed an Academic Progress Rate of 930. Three teams, women’s golf, women’s tennis and women’s cross country, achieved a perfect 1,000 multi-year APR. The Aggies also registered a 3.0 GPA or better in 26-consecutive semesters through the spring semester of 2018.
In May of 2015, members of the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) elected Moccia the President of the Association and completed his term as President at MOAA’s June symposium. MOAA includes 600-plus minority athletic administrators nationwide and advocates for increased participation and administrative opportunities for minorities in athletics. He also spent time serving as the Sun Belt Conference representative on the Lead1 Board of Directors.
Moccia was named an Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year in 2013 by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) at SIU as he directed the program to new heights.
He played an important role in a major fundraising/capital improvement project to build a new football stadium, a new athletic support building and to renovate the university’s basketball arena. He also negotiated media rights, footwear and apparel contracts.
Additionally, the Salukis were successful across the board during Moccia’s tenure, winning conference championships in football, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s tennis, softball, men’s and women’s track, and women’s swimming and diving.
He has also served on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet, was the FCS representative for the NCAA’s Administration Committee and served as liaison to Men’s Basketball Committee.
Moccia was previously the Associate Athletic Director for External Operations and then Senior Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Missouri from 1998-2006. He also worked as the Associate Athletics Director for External Operations at Texas State University from 1997-1998 and Director of Sales/Lobo Club assistant director at the University of New Mexico from 1993-1997.
A member of the US Bank New Mexico State Hall of Fame inducted in 1998, Moccia was the captain of the Aggie baseball team. He was twice honored as the Aggies MVP and won a team triple crown (leader in batting average, home runs and RBI). He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 1989 Major League Baseball draft, and played two seasons in the Tigers minor league system before entering athletic administration.
In addition to his bachelor’s degree in psychology from NM State, Moccia was awarded a master’s degree in sports administration from the University of New Mexico in 1993.
Moccia and his wife, Heidi – a former All-American women’s soccer player at UMass – are the parents of two children, Addie (10) and Gemma (5).

Mario Moccia will be here to answer your questions on THURSDAY (9/20) at 4:30PM ET, ASK YOUR QUESTIONS NOW!

[Tribeback Tuesday] The 2000s

Welcome to TribeBack Tuesday!

Each Tuesday during the 2015-16 offseason we will present a decade of Cleveland baseball history.
Previous Decades
1870s | 1880s | 1890s | 1900s | 1910s | 1920s | 1930s | 1940s | 1950s | 1960s | 1970s | 1980s | 1990s

The 2000s

By thedeejus and wundy
2000
Major League Baseball: Comerica Park opens in Detroit, and the first Subway Series (BARFFFFFF) is played between the Yankees and Mets. And for the first time in 162-game schedule history, no team won 100 games OR lost 100 games.
Cleveland Indians: The new decade, century and millennium signaled an end to the prosperous days of the 1990s. Mike Hargrove was fired and replaced with hitting coach Charlie Manuel, who ruptured his colon in spring training and had to crap into a colostemy bag the rest of the season. He was often seen running into the field to argue a call, crap-bag in hand.
Despite boning up the rotation with free agents Chuck Finley, Bobby Witt and 1985 Cy Young winner Dwight Gooden, the Indians' 90-72 record wasn't quite enough to make the playoffs this time, finishing five back of the White Sox in the Central and one out in the Wild Card.
Season highlights include Matt Underwood joining the broadcast team, the trade of Richie Sexson to the Brewers for Bob Wickman and Dave Justice to the Yankees for Jake Westbrook. After the season, Manny Ramirez bolted for the Red Sox and Sandy Alomar to the White Sox.
2000 Stats and Roster
2001
Major League Baseball: I think we all remember what happened on September 11. There were no games for a week, and when play resumed, baseball was an eerily quiet, somber experience. "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" was replaced at the 7th inning stretch with "God Bless America." Barry Bonds socked 73 home runs, breaking Mark McGwire's 70 and setting a single-season record that stands today. Weeks after the events of September 11, The Arizona Diamondbacks stun the Yankees in 7, scoring two runs off Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the 9th of Game 7 to win it all.
Cleveland Indians: The Indians boned up the middle of their lineup with free agents Ellis Burks and Juan Gonzalez, both of whom had excellent seasons at DH and in RF respectively. The Tribe would return to the playoffs, but be steamrolled by the 116-win Mariners in the first round. Rookie CC Sabathia wins 17 games but finishes 2nd in the Rookie of the Year voting to 28 year old Japanese league veteran Ichiro Suzuki - who also won the 2001 AL MVP.
Jim Thome socked his 243rd career home run on May 29 to become the Indians' all-time leader. On August 5th, before a national audience on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN, the Indians effected "The Impossible Return" - a game in which Cleveland trailed 14-2 at the 7th inning stretch, and came back to win. I won't waste your time describing it - please, sit back and let Tom Hamilton walk you through the events. [Highlights by Hammy] [Full ESPN game on Youtube]
After the season, Kenny Lofton bolted for the White Sox.
2001 Stats and Roster
2002
Major League Baseball: The All-Star game ends in a tie for the first time, a 7-7 score in Milwaukee, leading to the new rule that the league that wins the All-Star game gets home-field advantage in the World Series. The Anaheim Angels win their first World Series, taking it in 7 over the Giants.
Cleveland Indians: The Indians do some major shuffling before the season, and it results in a rebuilding season - Cleveland's 74-88 record is by far their worst since 1993; Charlie Manuel is fired midyear and replaced with Joel Skinner. Before the season, Cleveland shipped Robbie Alomar and prospects to the Mets and Matt Lawton and prospects; every single player involved turned out to be a disappointment. The main season highlight was on June 27th, when the Indians shipped Bartolo Colon to the Expos for three prospects named Brandon Phillips, Grady Sizemore and Cliff Lee. Jim Thome became the second Indian to hit 50 home runs. Oh, and Bill Selby socked a 2-out, come-from-behind walkoff grand slam against Mariano Rivera on July 14.
After the season, the beloved Jim Thome bolted for the Phillies.
2002 Stats and Roster
2003
Major League Baseball: Barry Bonds steals his 500th base, creating the 500 H500 SB club. The Braves tie a record by starting a game with three consecutive home runs. The Marlins beat the Yankees in 6 to win the World Series.
Cleveland Indians: Another rough year in Cleveland. New manager Eric Wedge uses 25 rookies in leading the Tribe to a 94-loss season. In the offseason the Indians pick up Casey Blake and Travis Hafner, who both have solid seasons in their first year with Cleveland, including a cycle by "Pronk." Sabathia continues to shine, and Milton Bradley leads the Tribe with a .321 batting average, .401 OBP and .521 slugging, but not without getting into his share of snits and tussles. Lebron James throws out the first pitch on June 27, a day after being selected #1 by the Cavs in the NBA draft.
2003 Stats and Roster
2004
Major League Baseball: Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 500th home run, Greg Maddux wins his 300th game, and Ichiro sets an all-time single-season record with 262 base hits. The Red Sox become the first and only team to win a best-of-7 series after being down 3-0, coming back against the Yankees in the ALCS then going on to sweep the Cardinals and win their first World Series in 86 years.
Cleveland Indians: Just before the start of the season, despite his excellent 2003 season, Milton Bradley pushes Eric Wedge's buttons for the final time and is shipped to the Dodgers for Franklin Gutierrez and Andrew Brown. The Indians show a 12-game improvement, but the 80-82 record isn't good for much despite adding free agent 2B Ron Belliard.
On April 19, Jake Westbrook pitches 7 perfect innings in relief, in the middle of a 10-4 loss to the Tigers. He then pitches a two-hitter in his next outing, working his way into the rotation for years to come. On July 16 the Indians tied a club record by hitting eight home runs against the Mariners, and broke the record by collecting 50 total bases. Cleveland defeated the Yankees 22-0 at Yankee Stadium on August 31 - behold the beautiful box score.
After the season, Omar Vizquel bolted for the Giants.
2004 Stats and Roster
2005
Major League Baseball: After the BALCO scandal, during which several players admitted to using steroids (including Jason Giambi, prior to his role in Cleveland as Beloved Old Guy on the TeamTM), MLB rolls out a new policy that enforces much harsher penalties for players testing positive for steroid use. Strike 1: 50-game suspension. Strike 2: 100-game suspension. Strike three: YER OUTTA HERE!
The Chicago White Sox kind of stun everyone when they win the World Series after an 88-year drought since their last WS win. Only 20 years to go before we hit that ignominious mark, Tribe fans!
Cleveland Indians: Juan Gonzalez returns to the Indians as a free agent prior to the season, but suffers a career-ending injury during his first at-bat of the season. Juan Gone, indeed. However, this allows the Indians to call up Grady Sizemore and give him a full-time role on the team, which turned out to be pretty pretty good.
Tim Lincecum was drafted by the Indians in the 42nd round of the draft, but did not sign. Despite a late-season tear of 17-9 in September and the chance to tie it up with the White Sox in the final series of the year, the Indians blow it and watch Chicago take it all the way to the World Series.
2005 Stats and Roster
2006
Major League Baseball: MLB introduces the Mother’s Day tradition of pink gear and bats. The St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series over the Detroit Tigers.
Cleveland Indians: A bright point in an otherwise dismal season, Travis Hafner belts his fifth grand slam of the season on July 7, the first player in MLB history to hit five before the All Star Break. He’s currently tied for first with Don Mattingly for single-season grand slam leaders with the six he hit this season.
Speaking of grand salamis, Kevin Kouzmanoff hits one off the first pitch he sees in his first major league at-bat, being the first guy to ever do so. This and Hafner’s stat are the only “firsts” you’ll see this season, because the Indians suck their way to a 78-84 record.
After July 20, the Wick will no longer be lit at Jacobs Field as Bob Wickman, heart-attack inducer, is traded to Atlanta. To this day he has an inexplicably rabid fan following.
2006 Stats and Roster
2007
Major League Baseball: Barry “Asterisk” Bonds surpasses “Hammerin’” Hank Aaron as the all-time home run leader on August 7.
In the MLB’s fourth year of celebrating Jackie Robinson Day (April 15 every year), players are invited to wear number 42 to commemorate Robinson. This gesture is met with mixed reactions. Later in the season, the Indians similarly pay tribute to Larry Doby, first African American in the AL, by sporting number 14 for a game against the Reds.
Tito Francona wins his second World Series title with Boston as the Red Sox sweep the Rockies in four games. Y’all got any more of them WS wins, Tito?
Cleveland Indians: The home opener and following games are postponed due to heavy snow, so the Indians relocate to Milwaukee. Despite the cold start to the season, the Indians have a red-hot year, clinching the Central with a couple of nail-biting walk-offs and extra-inning wins (thank you, Casey Blake <3*).
The Indians win the ALDS over the Yankees, but fall to Boston in the ALCS. So close… and yet so far…
* - I can neither confirm nor deny that my friends and I formed the Blake's Bitches fan club in college and went to games drunk to try to get his attention.
2007 Stats and Roster
2008
Major League Baseball: After Rockies minor league coach Mike Coolbaugh was killed by a foul ball, all first and third base coaches are required to wear batting helmets starting this season.
Instant replay makes its debut on August 28.
The good God-fearin’ folks in Tampa Bay drop the “Devil” from their name, becoming the Tampa Bay Rays. They make it to the World Series, but are beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Cleveland Indians: The Indians can’t repeat their success from the previous season and descend into third in the Central with an 81-81 record. Nnnnnoooo…
Cleveland’s 455-game sellout streak is dashed when the Red Sox sell out their 456th game on August 12.
Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL, closes its doors. The Indians will henceforth spend Spring Training in the Cactus League in Arizona.
The Chief Wahoo vest uniform is replaced by an alternate off-white home uniform without names on the back. Like it or not, the ol’ Chief is beginning a years-long process of being phased out.
Jacobs Field is renamed Progressive Field I mean uhh nothing of note happened with any ballpark names nosiree. :’(
But, uh, hey! At least something cool happens this season: Asdrubal Cabrera records the 14th unassisted triple play in baseball history on May 12.
2008 Stats and Roster
2009
Major League Baseball: The Yankees beat the Phillies to take the World Series. Mehhh.
Cleveland Indians: The stars’n’stripes hats reserved for holidays and 9/11 now feature a “C” instead of Chief Wahoo because plastering patriotic ‘Murica imagery over a Native American caricature was met with backlash in previous seasons.
The Indians are basement-dwelling losers with the KC Royals this season, both finishing with a pathetic 65-97 record.
2009 Stats and Roster
The 2000s were a far cry from the glory days of the 1990s, but if the Royals were able to turn it around in a few short years, can the Indians do the same? Find out next week on... TRIBEBACK TUESDAY!

Orioles announce Opening Day deets

Team press release follows. tl;dr: the usual pomp and circumstance with Pugh, Bobby Zirkin and Fred throwing out first pitches
The Orioles today have announced plans for the first home game of the 2017 season, Monday, April 3, at 3:05 p.m. ET against the Toronto Blue Jays, which will air on MASN, WJZ, CBS Radio’s 105.7 The Fan and the entire 40-station Orioles Radio Network.
PREGAME FUN AROUND THE YARD
To allow fans the opportunity to experience the excitement of Opening Day, the entire ballpark will open at noon on Monday. Each fan will receive a 2017 schedule magnet, presented by Long Fence, at the gates. Roving musical groups will entertain fans on Eutaw Street and the main concourses.
PREGAME CEREMONIES
PLAYER INTRODUCTIONS
Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 2:30 p.m., when pregame ceremonies will begin. MASN broadcaster JIM HUNTER will serve as emcee for the pregame festivities. Fans can also tune in on MASN and WJZ for coverage of pre-game ceremonies.
In a continuation of the Opening Day tradition, Orioles players and coaches will be introduced prior to the game. Orioles players will run through the center field gate on an orange carpet and take their places between first and second base. Manager BUCK SHOWALTER, coaches, and staff will be introduced from the Orioles dugout. Members of the Blue Jays will be announced and will run from their dugout to line up between second and third base.
OriolesREACH has arranged for 100 youth from the Baltimore City Recreation and Parks “Play Baseball” Program to line the orange carpet holding Orioles flags during player introductions. Each child will also receive a complimentary game ticket for Opening Day, concessions, an Orioles T-shirt and cap, as well as transportation to and from the game as part of the OriolesREACH Game Day Experience Program. Each season, the Orioles team up with third baseman MANNY MACHADO and his wife, YAINEE, to support the Baltimore City Recreation and Parks “Play Baseball” Program through the Manny Machado BaseBOWL Tournament. In 2016, the Manny Machado BaseBOWL Tournament raised more than $92,000 to support the Baltimore City Recreation Department’s eight-week “Play Baseball” campaign (via the Baltimore City Foundation). The initiative benefited 300 youth, ages 9-12, by supplying baseball equipment, uniforms, transportation, and field refurbishment to play baseball during the summer at Baltimore City Recreation and Parks centers. In support of the Machados’ efforts, the Orioles Charitable Foundation also donated $10,000 to Baltimore City Recreation and Parks.
For the 24th consecutive season, one fan will be chosen to represent all Orioles fans as the team’s “10th man.” The fan will be introduced as a part of the Orioles starting lineup during the pregame ceremonies.
NATIONAL ANTHEM AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
American tenor RICHARD TROXELL will perform the Canadian National Anthem and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Troxell, a native of Thurmont, Md., has an extensive resume of film and theater performance experience both in the United States and abroad. Troxell will also sing “God Bless America” during the seventh inning stretch. This year marks the 11th time he has performed the National Anthem on Orioles Opening Day.
During the anthem, a 30’x 42’ American flag from Fort McHenry will be unfurled over the batter’s eye wall in center field. The flag is a replica of the one that flew over Fort McHenry when Francis Scott Key wrote the National Anthem.
Colors will be presented by both the United States Joint Armed Forces Color Guard, provided by the Military District of Washington, and the Flag Party of the Canadian Armed Forces, provided by the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C.
CEREMONIAL FIRST PITCH
Longtime Orioles Radio Network broadcaster FRED MANFRA will join new Mayor of the City of Baltimore CATHERINE PUGH and Maryland State Senator BOBBY ZIRKIN in throwing out simultaneous ceremonial first pitches.
Manfra recently retired from full-time broadcasting duties after 24 years with the Orioles Radio Network, though he will still call select home games during the 2017 season. The East Baltimore native and Patterson High School graduate joined Orioles Radio broadcasts in 1993.
Mayor Pugh was sworn in as the 50th Mayor of the City of Baltimore on December 6, 2016. She has been a public servant for more than 15 years, holding elected office on the Baltimore City Council and in the Maryland General Assembly, as a State Delegate, State Senator, and Senate Majority Leader. She is the visionary, co-founder, and Chair of the Baltimore Design School, a public school for sixth through twelfth graders, and a founder of the Baltimore Marathon.
State Senator Zirkin was elected to the Maryland State Senate in 2006 and has been serving in the Maryland General Assembly since his election in 1998. He currently serves as chair of the Judicial Proceedings Committee.
SILVER SLUGGER AWARD PRESENTATION FOR TRUMBO
2016 Silver Slugger Award recipient MARK TRUMBO will receive his award from a Louisville Slugger representative during a special pregame ceremony. Trumbo was voted as one of three American League outfielders to receive a Silver Slugger Award, marking the first time in his career that he has won this award. The Orioles have now had 12 different players win a Silver Slugger Award and 21 total winners.
The Silver Slugger Awards, determined by a vote of Major League Baseball coaches and managers, recognize the best offensive producers at each position in their respective leagues. Coaches and managers base their selections on a combination of offensive statistics including batting average, home runs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, as well as the coaches’ and managers’ general impressions of a player’s overall offensive value. Managers and coaches are not allowed to vote for players on their own team.
NEW FOOD ELEMENTS COMING TO ORIOLE PARK
New food offerings for the 2017 season will be announced on Friday, March 31.
[usual bring your own food and security mumbo jumbo]
SOCIAL MEDIA ON OPENING DAY
Fans are encouraged to use social media while at Oriole Park at Camden Yards to share their Opening Day experiences with friends and followers. By using the hashtag #Birdland on Twitter and on Instagram, fans can have their tweets and/or photos selected to appear on the Oriole Park video board before and during the game. Major League Baseball and New Era are also encouraging fans to share photographs with their #CapsOn across social media platforms on Opening Day. Fans are encouraged to visit www.orioles.com/connect and sign up to follow all of the Orioles official social media platforms.
ORIOLE PARK BALLPARK APP
